Quite belated, but happy new year! The holiday season may be over, but it’s still “cold season” both in terms of cold germs and cold temperatures so as far as I’m concerned, it’s still the right season for enjoying warm drinks. Specifically, mulled wine. This time I adapted my mulled red wine recipe to use a bottle of that Schwarz Katz riesling wine that comes in a cat-shaped bottle to make a mulled white wine. The result has enough citrus, ginger, and honey to likely cure the common cold, and enough white wine, rum, and spices to banish the winter blues, so definitely give it a try★Truth be told, I’m not a big drinker of sweet white wines like riesling, but I cannot resist those cat bottles and have found myself collecting them. In the spring and summer I make white wine sangria to get rid of the wine in said cat bottles, so it finally hit me: if sangria is to spring/summer as mulled wine is autumn and winter, making mulled wine could be a good way to use up the cat wine in the colder months.
Until now I had never even tried a mulled white wine before, so I just made some adjustments to my go-to red mulled wine recipe such as swapping the apples for ginger and the brandy for rum. The result was a bit like an alcoholic version of some of the hot ginger citrus drinks people turn to when they have a cold. It was pretty sweet so I personally might reduce the honey to 2 tbsp if I made it with riesling again, but if you like sweet drinks or are using another white wine that’s a bit more dry 4 tbsp of honey may be just fine.
At any rate, if you have white wine to use up, give it a try★
- 1 bottle of white wine (750 ml)
- 1 orange (leave the skin on)
- 1 inch piece of ginger
- 1 cup (200 ml) apple juice
- ½ cup (100 ml) rum
- 2-4 tbsp honey (adjust to taste and dryness of the white you are using)
- 5 cloves
- 3 anise pods
- Peel the ginger, slice, and put it into a large pot.
- Slice the orange into bite size pieces (leave the skin on) and put it into the pot
- Add the wine, apple juice, rum, honey, and spices to the pot and heat it over medium heat.
- Just as it starts to boil turn down the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let sit for about an hour so that the flavors can infuse.
- Strain off the fruit and spices, pour into glasses to serve, and enjoy★
